The Oregon Zoo has been around since the late 1800s and large parts of it had been needing repair. Through charitable donations in early 2013, the zoo was able to begin working towards updating and expanding exhibitions. To welcome loyal customers back, The Oregon Zoo launched a brand new visitor's app to help guide them through the new park experience.

Idea

The app was reimagined with the purpose of providing a useful and seamless supplementary experience to a visitor’s journey. The app was designed, much like a Gallery headset, to provide contextual information to visitors when or if they wanted it. It was never supposed to be the main experience, so balancing what was included and what was left to real-world was crucial.

Since much of the experience in a zoo is visual, when designing this app, a huge focus was placed on the imagery. The app was styled in keeping with the theme of a supplementary guide book. Instead of using pre-existing photography from their website, I personally scheduled several trips down to the Oregon Zoo to shoot new imagery which could easily shrink in sizing without losing their quality and content clarity.
